Ms. Widen’s practice focuses on the defense of public entities and their employees in civil
litigation, including civil rights, Section 1983, privacy, medical malpractice, wrongful death, and
negligence actions.  Her representative clients include Alameda County, Alameda County
Sheriff’s Office,  Alameda County Department of Social Services, Marin County, Marin County
Sheriff’s Office, San Joaquin County, San Joaquin County District Attorneys’ Office, Santa
Cruz County, and Sutter County.

Ms. Widen also has expertise in handling
appeals in both federal and state courts on behalf of
the firm’s clients.  Her appellate practice includes brief writing and oral arguments on all types
of appellate matters, including petitions for extraordinary relief.  

Ms. Widen began her law practice in 1995 as an associate in a large civil law firm in St.
Petersburg, Florida, where she primarily handled insurance defense litigation, commercial
litigation, and appeals.  She joined Haapala, Thompson & Abern, LLP, as an associate after
relocating to San Francisco in 2001, and became a partner in 2005.
