Mr. Abern’s practice focuses primarily on insurance defense matters as trial counsel.  He has
extensive experience in defending complex litigation including landlord/tenant disputes,
personal injury claims, toxic tort and mold claims, Americans with Disabilities Act claims,
construction defect claims, business torts, defamation, real estate transactions, boundary
disputes, landslide disputes, and intentional torts.   

He has particular expertise in handling cases defended by insurance carriers pursuant to a
reservation of rights.  He has served as
Cumis counsel and as non-Cumis personal counsel
for policyholders, in addition to his insurance defense practice.  He also has an extensive
appellate practice.

Mr. Abern began his legal career with the firm as a law clerk in 1990, while still attending the
University of San Francisco School of Law.  He has been with the firm ever since.  He became
a partner in 2000.

Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Abern worked as a craftsman building musical instruments,
pipe organs and fine furniture.
